Time for Fall

This time of year, there’s nowhere I’d rather be than riding along with Jordan in the combine. When I get home from the office, I grab two cans of pop and head for the field to keep him company. We have the best conversations as we make round after round. It’s one of the few places I can be where I let myself lose track of time.
With harvest in full swing and school back in session, life seems to settle into a more scheduled routine. For moms with children in sports, life becomes even more demanding. On page 48, we meet three women who dedicate their time to the complicated schedules of sports. In the article, Mary Woitas of Sleepy Eye, Minnesota, shares that 80 percent of her family’s trips in the vehicle are related to sporting events. Completely devoted to their children, the women find reward in being a part of an important time of their lives.
When working on this issue, I had the privilege of meeting cover woman Cecil Gassis. Born in Khartoum, Sudan, Cecil bravely made her way to the United States five years ago. Empathizing with women in a similar transition, Cecil coordinates Walking In Two Worlds at the Mankato, Minnesota, YWCA. This program enables immigrant and refugee women to build community and skills to become successful citizens. Cecil’s smile and vivacious spirit make her a joy to be around. Begin reading her story on page 60.
Harvest will go fast, taking time to enjoy this wonderful season is a must. I’m loving long walks along our quiet country road with our puppy Sadie and making lunches for my farmer to send with him as he heads to the field.
